Tell us what you really think Brett

We should be looking at the slowing of the global economy with relief...

Hey brett,
I think you've generalised too much when you say that there is only a certain amount of "value" on the planet and this value is only embodied in physical things.
Service is what embodies "value" and you can be confused otherwise because, at the moment most of our labour is imbued on physical objects to making them service delivery devices. Markets are built around services to people. The supply of service can be considered infinite, because the fruit of the service dies along with the person those services were delivered to.
It is true that global population can be problematic as the resources we can put service are physically limited. When recycling takes off more than it has, we could probably fit more people in the planet than we currently think possible. (take a read of asimov's cave's of steel for an idea). A recession won't help with population, because it's human nature to have more children when you are poor.
There is room for continued growth if we can adjust our thinking so that non-physical things can be seen as valuable. It's happening now, with the internet, entertainment and the knowledge economy. All we need now is a bigger focus on recycling and economic services built around cleaning up the mess we've made of the planet. A service to our future on planet earth.
I admire that your out there and writing about this stuff Brett.
Rod.
